Inquiry: I was driving my company vehicle when I reended a school bus. Nobody was injured, cop came to the scene and told me my license was suspended for unpaid tickets. It had been suspended since June ( it’s now September) . I never received notice of suspension. My address wasnt updated when I moved.
I was given a summons to appear in court on nov 8. I’m not sure what to do, what this means, any help would be amazing.
Repsonse: You have been issued two very serious charges. The CARELESS DRIVING charge carries 6 demerit points, a total maximum fine of $2,500.00, and up to two years of licence suspension. The penalties for DRIVE UNDER SUSPENSION go up to a total maximum fine of $6,250.00 and a mandatory 6 month licence suspension. Both charges potentially include imprisonment, but the Court will not likely apply that penalty unless you have had a prior conviction for DRIVE UNDER SUSPENSION or there have been aggrevating factors involved in the collision. It is very rare that we are unable to reduce or eliminate a charge of CARELESS DRIVING charge. The DRIVE UNDER SUSPENSION may also have have defence or can at least be limited for the amount of penalties applied. I would recommend discussing your matter with one of our staff in more detail. We offer a no-cost initial consultation via our toll-free number 1-866-801-8299.
